Associate Degree of Business
About this course
The Associate Degree of Business is a two-year (full-time or part-time equivalent) course that develops knowledge in a range of topics that are relevant to various careers in the private and public business and tourism sectors. It is a pathway into SCU's business, information technology and tourism degrees.
Graduates of the Associate Degree of Business are guaranteed entry into linked degree programs as follows: Bachelor of Business, Bachelor of Digital Business, Bachelor of Business in Tourism and Hospitality Management, Bachelor of Information Technology.
Graduates may receive up to 16 units of credit towards their undergraduate degree (depends on course and units studied).
Graduates may find work in para-professional roles in a range of settings in the private and public business sectors across a range of industries and in fields such as general business, marketing, management, retail, tourism and other business services.
Graduates who proceed to one of the pathway Bachelor degrees will gain further specialised knowledge and skills and be suited to a range of careers within the industry based on their study discipline and areas of focus.
Major areas of study
The course covers a broad range of business topics such as business language and organisational communication through to accounting, marketing principles, statistics, technology for business, ethics and sustainability. Students can also select to focus on an area of their interest for part of the course including accounting, finance, human resource management, international business, information systems, marketing, or digital marketing.
Assessment tasks vary from unit to unit and can include essays, reports, audio or video presentations, online quizzes, case analyses, and examinations. Assessment items are in accordance with learning outcomes and designed to ensure that all the graduate attributes are assessed throughout the course. The performance criteria, grading standards and due dates for assessment tasks are included in each Unit Information Guide. Students receive timely feedback on their assessment submissions.
On-campus students experience a variety of teaching approaches including face-to-face lectures and tutorials. Some units offer online activities, classes, pre-recorded and/or live lectures. The method of teaching may vary from unit to unit.
The online study option is highly interactive and strives to promote collaboration and a sense of community. Students may receive online pre-recorded and/or live lectures, electronic study materials, workshops, online discussion forums and virtual classes. The method of teaching may vary from unit to unit.
Your previous learning experiences relevant to one or more units in this course may help you reduce the duration of your degree.
- Recognition of formal and non-formal learning
Credit may be awarded to a student for formal learning (gained through full or partial achievement of an accredited qualification or course) or non-formal learning (that takes place through a non-accredited course or program of learning) completed at Southern Cross University or in other learning settings in Australia and/or overseas.

An application for advanced standing must be submitted so we can assess your prior learning. MySCU is a student's point of entry to a range of online services and resources that support study and student life. The portal includes unit learning sites and information sites where students can access resources, communication tools and useful links that are integral to their studies.
The web-based program Blackboard Collaborate delivers advanced on-line learning environments for students and lecturers to communicate and collaborate through virtual meeting spaces and classrooms. They can share files, presentations, and applications. If the session is recorded, students can view it afterwards.
Learning materials include the provision of unit information guides, study guides and books of readings. Students may need to purchase or access prescribed textbooks.
College Connect offers extra support for all students undertaking a SCU College Bachelor degree, Associate degree or Diploma.
The SCU library provides a wide range of services including librarian assistance, print and electronic resources, a document delivery service, catalogues, databases, ebooks, ereadings, and full-text journal literature.
The academic skills team supports student learning by offering online and on-campus academic skills workshops, email, phone, and one-on-one support.
Equipment and facilities
Southern Cross University provides students with modern well equipped teaching spaces such as lecture theatres, classrooms, and studios or laboratories tailored to meet the needs of specific study disciplines. Contemporary audiovisual equipment is standard in most teaching venues, and students have access to computer labs for individual study purposes.

International applicants for admission to candidature to the Associate Degree of Business or the Diploma of Business must have an assessable entry qualification from a country where English is the main language and where the medium of instruction for that qualification was English, or have completed an International English Language Test (or equivalent) with a minimum overall score of 5.5 and a minimum score of 5.0 in each subtest (or equivalent).
To be awarded the Associate Degree of Business a student is required to successfully complete sixteen (16) units (192 credit points) comprising:
- All three (3) units from Part A; and
- All six (6) units from Part B; and
- Seven (7) units from Part C.
- A student who has completed the equivalent of eight (8) units (96 credit points) from Part A and Part B or C may elect to be awarded a Diploma of Business following withdrawal from candidature for the Associate Degree of Business.

Important: if you are attending Year 12 at a SCU Partner School, you're eligible to apply for STAR Early Entry. This gives you the opportunity to receive an early offer based on your Principal's recommendation.
