About this course

Midwives are responsible for the care of women and babies during pre-pregnancy, pregnancy, labour, birth and the early infancy period. They provide direct clinical care and support for healthy women and babies and work collaboratively with doctors and other members of a health care team when there are risks or complications.

The Bachelor of Midwifery is specifically designed to develop graduates for entry to professional midwifery practice. The course prepares graduates with skills, knowledge and attitudes to provide high quality woman-centred care through safe and effective midwifery practice in accordance with the Australian Nursing and Midwifery Council National Competency Standards for the Midwife.

Graduates are equipped to apply sound evidence-based reasoning skills to their midwifery practice; work in continuity-of-care models in partnership with women; and collaborate effectively in multidisciplinary teams to promote effective outcomes. The degree aims to produce graduates with the capability, confidence and flexibility to adapt to changes and contribute to innovation in the midwifery profession and the health care system, focusing on women and their needs through a primary health approach.

Pathway for Registered Nurses: In accordance with the admission requirements, a Registered Nurse (RN) only needs to complete the midwifery specific units, (60% of the total course, mostly part-time) in order to complete the Bachelor of Midwifery. Students do not begin midwifery placements until session 2 of year 1, but are thereafter in practice continuously except for the University break at the end of the year. Students may be able to negotiate to meet their practice requirements either partly or fully whilst in paid employment as a RN midwifery student.

Career opportunities

Registered midwives may practise midwifery in various capacities in public and private hospitals and community, maternity and neonatal health care settings in urban, rural and remote areas. They can practise as group practice midwives, clinical midwifery consultants, midwifery educators, midwifery unit managers, community midwives, researchers, and as independent midwives (with further training). They can work in any state of Australia and in New Zealand.

Professional recognition

The Bachelor of Midwifery is approved by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia and provides the necessary qualification for graduates to be eligible to register and practise as a midwife in Australia.

Further training is required to work as a privately practising midwife.

Professional placement

Students are required to undertake about 1,000 hours of supervised placements that will enable them to focus on woman-centred care and provide continuity-of-care with women throughout their pregnancies; attend antenatal and postnatal assessments/visits with women; provide direct care to women during labour; assist women during birth; support women and their babies with diverse needs across pregnancy, labour and birth, and the postnatal period; and experience the full scope of midwifery practice.

Professional experience placements require students to fulfil certain pre-requisites prior to attending any placements (e.g. a working with children check and National Police Certificate). Prior to applying for this course, please consider the important information regarding these requirements.

Assessment methods

Students complete a wide variety of assessment items during the course including written exams, oral exams, academic writing, clinical and practical exams.

Teaching methods

The course is underpinned by an innovative, experiential learning curriculum focusing on woman-centred care in practice. The course features a variety of clinical and community experiences, which will expose students to the varied aspects of midwifery practice resulting in graduates able to function to the full scope of contemporary midwifery practice.

  • Recognition of formal and non-formal learning
    Credit may be awarded to a student for formal learning (gained through full or partial achievement of an accredited qualification or course) or non-formal learning (that takes place through a non-accredited course or program of learning) completed at Southern Cross University or in other learning settings in Australia and/or overseas.
  • Recognition of informal learning
    Credit may be awarded on the basis of current informal learning (that takes place through work, social, family or leisure activities).

Learning resources

MySCU is a student's point of entry to a range of online services and resources that support study and student life. The portal includes unit learning sites and information sites where students can access resources, communication tools and useful links that are integral to their studies.

The web-based study environment Blackboard Learn delivers an advanced online learning environment for students and lecturers to communicate and collaborate through virtual meeting spaces, classrooms, and discussion boards. They can share files, presentations and applications. If a tutorial or lecture is recorded, students can view it afterwards.

Learning materials include the provision of unit information guides, study guides and readings. Students may need to purchase or access prescribed text books.

The SCU Library provides a wide range of services that include face-to-face and online help, and access to print and electronic resources. To find out more, see the Library Toolbox.

The Academic Skills team supports student learning by offering online and on-campus academic skills workshops, assignment reviews and small group or one-on-one face-to-face, phone or Skype consultations during business hours 9am to 4.30pm. Appointments can be made via the MySCU Hub ‘Connect Now’ button or on the Academic Skills home page. Students can also book appointments online in Career Hub.

The YourTutor service provides online after-hours study support for SCU students. This service is available from 4pm to midnight Sunday to Friday via the 'Connect Now' button on MySCU Hub or from a link in nominated unit learning sites. The YourTutor service offers generic writing feedback and live online chat assistance for foundational concepts and study skills.

Equipment and facilities

Southern Cross University provides students with modern well equipped teaching spaces such as lecture theatres, classrooms, and studios or laboratories tailored to meet the needs of specific study disciplines. Contemporary audiovisual equipment is standard in most teaching venues, and students have access to computer labs for individual study purposes.

Midwifery students access electronic resources, medical technology, and the anatomy and physiology lab. The midwifery birth suites are designed to simulate childbirth environments from natural childbirth to high dependency births. Students utilise highly specialised equipment and practise on anatomical/simulation models, including the high fidelity SimMum interactive mannequin. Students also have access to a purpose-built neonatal care environment,visit healthlabs

Admission requirements

Applicants must have achieved:

  1. satisfactory completion of at least six years of primary and secondary education taught and assessed in English in one of the Recognised Countries (see below), including at least two years between years 7 and 12; or
  2. completed at least two years (full time equivalent combined secondary and/or tertiary and/or vocational education taught and assessed solely in English, in one of the Recognised Countries; or
  3. the IELTS (academic module) with a minimum overall score of 7 and a minimum score of 7 in each of the four components: or
  4. the OET with a minimum score of B in each of the four components; or
  5. the PTE Academic with a minimum overall score of 65 and a minimum score of 65 in each of the four communicative skills; or
  6. the TOEFL iBT with a minimum total score of 94 and the following minimum score in each section of the test: 24 listening, 24 reading, 27 writing, and 23 speaking.

Recognised Countries means the following countries: Australia, Canada, New Zealand, Republic of Ireland, South Africa, UK and USA.

Please note, Rule 2 Schedule B test scores equivalencies do not apply to this course.

An applicant who has completed a Certificate III qualification will not be admitted solely on the basis of this qualification

Course requirements

To be eligible for the award of Bachelor of Midwifery a candidate shall successfully complete the equivalent of twenty four (24) units (288 credit points) comprising the units listed in the Schedule of Units attached to these Rules and complete all professional experience hours assigned to the units in which they are enrolled.

Duration

The maximum duration for completion of the award of Bachelor of Midwifery is six (6) years in total. Candidates who have an interrupted study of more than twelve (12) continuous months will be assessed on a case-by-case basis and may be required to undertake specific activities to ensure clinical currency prior to continuation with the course.

Professional Experience Learning

This course includes professional experience learning. Pre-requisites to meet national and state-based regulatory requirements, as detailed on School of Health and Human Sciences Professional Experience page must be met prior to attending professional experience placement. All professional experience learning hours must be completed and professional behaviour and conduct must be demonstrated.
