About this course

The Bachelor of Nursing provides students with a combination of foundational science, professional knowledge and clinical experiences to comprehensively prepare graduates for a career in nursing and health. The degree aims to produce graduates with the competence, confidence and flexibility to adapt to changes and contribute to innovation in the nursing profession and the health care system.

Graduates are equipped to apply sound evidence-based reasoning skills to their nursing practice, provide therapeutic care to patients, coordinate nursing care to individuals and groups, and work independently as well as collaborate in multidisciplinary teams for effective outcomes.

This course is also suitable for Enrolled Nurses (graduates of the HLT Enrolled Nurse Diploma) or equivalent qualification, who wish to achieve the Bachelor of Nursing in two years. Students undertaking this pathway must commence the course in Session 1.

Career opportunities

Graduates are suited to careers in a range of public and private health sectors, including but not restricted to, clinical settings such as paediatrics, community health and education, as practice nurse in GP clinics, child care, aged care, peri-operative care, Indigenous health, rural and remote area health, emergency departments and in mental health.

Professional recognition

The degree is accredited by the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia and provides the necessary qualification for graduates to be eligible to become a Registered Nurse in Australia.

Professional placement

Supervised clinical placements provide students with experiences of nursing (totalling 1 040 hours) in settings relevant to their areas of study in government and private hospitals and health agencies. This may include acute and low care health facilities; community settings; mental health facilities; extended residential aged care; GP practices; health promotion and education; intensive care; health clinics; accident and emergency; palliative care; primary health care settings and related nursing and health services within metropolitan, regional and rural areas throughout NSW and south-east QLD. Major areas of study

The course is responsive to contemporary nursing practices and provides content and clinical experiences as follows:

Professional areas: critical thinking and analysis, provision and coordination of care, independent and collaborative care, primary health care, mental health, acute and complex care, chronic disease management, palliative care, leadership and care management, aged care.

Biological sciences: anatomy, physiology, patho-physiology and pharmacology.

Social sciences: Australian health care system, Indigenous studies, philosophy, psychology and sociology for health sciences, legal and ethical studies and research methods.

Assessment methods

A variety of assessment methods is used in this course including multiple choice examinations, short answer examinations, essay examinations, case studies, tutorial and workshop presentations, debates, written assignments and clinical skills testing. For each unit there are usually two to three assessment items.

Teaching methods

On-campus students experience a variety of teaching approaches including lectures, tutorials, online activities and video-linked or podcast virtual classes. The method of teaching may vary from unit to unit.

Some units in this course are also available by distance education. Our distance education study option is highly interactive and strives to promote collaboration and a sense of community. Students may receive a combination of podcast or video-linked lectures, electronic study materials, workshops, online discussion forums and virtual classes. Your previous learning experiences relevant to one or more units in this course may help you cut months or years off your degree.

  • Recognition of formal and non-formal learning
    Credit may be awarded to a student for formal learning (gained through full or partial achievement of an accredited qualification or course) or non-formal learning (that takes place through a non-accredited course or program of learning) completed at Southern Cross University or in other learning settings in Australia and/or overseas.

If your previous study or educational institution is not listed, we still encourage you to apply for advanced standing because you might still be eligible.

An application for advanced standing must be submitted so we can assess your prior learning. Please apply for advanced standing at the same time as you apply for admission into this course, because the amount of credit awarded will determine the sequence of units you will study.

Learning resources

MySCU is a student's point of entry to a range of online services and resources that support study and student life. The portal includes unit learning sites and information sites where students can access resources, communication tools and useful links that are integral to their studies.

The web-based study environment Blackboard Learn delivers an advanced online learning environment for students and lecturers to communicate and collaborate through virtual meeting spaces, classrooms, and discussion boards. They can share files, presentations and applications. If a tutorial or lecture is recorded, students can view it afterwards.

Learning materials include the provision of unit information guides, study guides and readings. Students may need to purchase or access prescribed text books.

The Academic Skills team supports student learning by offering online and on-campus academic skills workshops, email, phone, and one-on-one support.

Equipment and facilities

Southern Cross University provides students with modern well equipped teaching spaces such as lecture theatres, classrooms, and studios or laboratories tailored to meet the needs of specific study disciplines. Contemporary audiovisual equipment is standard in most teaching venues, and students have access to computer labs for individual study purposes.

A range of online and electronic technologies are used to conduct and support the delivery of this course. Students have access to the clinical nursing simulation spaces which are fitted with state-of-the-art hospital and electronic equipment. Each campus has access to SimMan – an interactive hi-fidelity model which can be programmed to simulate real life conditions and patient scenarios. Specialised science laboratories are also used.

Admission requirements

  1. Applicants for admission to candidature shall normally have satisfied the requirements prescribed in Rule 2 Section 2 of the Rules Relating to Awards as deemed eligible for admission by the School Board and have obtained a level of achievement acceptable to the School Board; and
  2. have an assessable level of English Language ability to the standard for Registration as a Nurse as set out by the relevant Australian Nursing Regulation Authority, from time to time:
    1. International applicants must be able to demonstrate proficiency of English deemed acceptable to the School Board, as set out by the relevant Nursing Regulatory Authority; and
    2. have achieved a minimum score of 7.0 in an International English Language Test System (IELTS) on each of the individual bands of reading, writing, speaking and listening on any one day.
  3. As an alternative to Rule 2 Section 2 of the Rules Relating to Awards, applicants for admission to candidature may be selected where the applicant is an enrolled nurse who holds the national training package qualification Diploma of Nursing (Enrolled) and who is registered with the relevant Australian Nursing Regulation Authority
  4. An applicant who has completed a Certificate III qualification will not be admitted on the basis of this qualification

Course requirements

To be eligible for the award of Bachelor of Nursing, a candidate:

  1. shall successfully complete not less than twenty-four (24) units comprising all units listed in Part A of the Schedule of Units attached to these Rules, and have satisfactorily met the requirements for all professional experience placement; or
  2. who is an Enrolled Nurse and admitted on the basis of Admission Requirements, Clause c, will be required to successfully complete 180 credit points, comprising all units listed in Part B of the Schedule of Units attached to these Rules, and have satisfactorily met the requirements for all professional experience placement.

Student Progression

  1. Candidates are not permitted to have an extended period of more than 18 months between study of any two (2) of the Formation Based Learning Units (Clinical or Professional Experience).
  2. Notwithstanding the above, candidates who have an Interrupted Study Sequence of more than 18 months will be assessed on a case-by-case basis and may be required to undertake a specified supported professional experience placement to ensure clinical currency prior to continuation with the course.
  3. A candidate who has twice not satisfactorily met the requirements in a Formation Based Clinical unit or Professional Experience Placement will either be:
    1. excluded from the award; or
    2. subject to adequately demonstrated grounds of appeal (consistent with University Policy), permitted to re-enrol in a Formation Based Clinical Unit following approval by the Head of School.
  4. A candidate who has failed the equivalent of thirty six (36) credit points within one academic year (three (3) study sessions) will either be:
    1. excluded for a maximum of one (1) study period.  Students must provide evidence of having obtained study skills assistance during the period of exclusion; or
    2. subject to adequately demonstrated grounds of appeal (consistent with University Rule 2, Section 10), permitted to enrol following approval by the Head of School. 


The maximum duration for completion of the award of Bachelor of Nursing is seven (7) years in total which includes any period for a leave of absence.

Advanced standing

Candidates admitted under Admission Requirements, Clause c will be granted advanced standing following successful completion of:

  • NRS20006 Foundations to Nursing;
  • BIO20003 Intermediate Anatomy and Physiology;
  • NRS20005 Nursing Practices.
