About this course

Pedorthics is about keeping people mobile and getting the best performance from their feet, footwear or orthoses. The Bachelor of Pedorthics provides the knowledge and skills required for graduates to become a professional pedorthist.

Pedorthists work in private practice or allied health practices, and may receive patient referrals from medical professionals.

Pedorthics is a growing industry and Southern Cross University is the first to offer a Bachelor qualification in this area.

Career opportunities

As a pedorthist – a health care professional who specialises in the improvement of human movement, in particular gait and better foot function. A pedorthist conducts a comprehensive assessment that may lead to them manufacturing corrective footwear, orthoses or other supportive devices. Pedorthists work with adults, children, people with disabilities and athletes. They can also use their skills to make comfortable fashion footwear.

Typical career examples include:

Working with adults – addressing associated pain from foot, knee and back issues to improve the quality of life.

Diabetes care – where the correction and management of the feet through footwear and orthoses can prevent limb loss.

Disability health services – where the correct footwear, orthoses and support is vital to ensure the best outcomes and to minimise deterioration of function and improve comfort.

Footwear design and manufacture – for those with an interest in footwear fashion, use your pedorthic know-how to make fashion footwear unique yet comfortable.

Paediatrics – giving toddlers and children assistance with correct footwear and orthoses.

Sporting industry – where the interaction of footwear and orthoses can assist athletes to perform at their best. Many serious and professional athletes have their orthoses and footwear fine-tuned to their needs.

International – studying pedorthics may open employment opportunities overseas as students will be exposed to a range of international contacts.

Professional recognition

The University is undertaking accreditation through the Pedorthic Association Australia. Once accredited, the degree will enable graduates to practise as professional pedorthists, become members of the Association, and appear on the Medical Grade Footwear Register (the Australian register of pedorthists).

Professional placement

During the course, students gain workplace experience to apply their skills and knowledge. They will complete approximately 1 000 hours of professional placement in various settings throughout the three years of study.

Major areas of study

The course develops comprehensive knowledge and associated skills in this new allied health profession. Students are introduced to foot care as a requirement for living independently and being mobile. Studies include learning about health problems associated with feet and footwear design and production.

Assessment methods

A variety of assessment methods is used in this course including multiple choice examinations, short answer examinations, essay examinations, case studies, tutorial and workshop presentations, debates, written assignments, simulations and clinical skills testing.

In the clinical settings, clinical e-portfolios, reflective exercises and clinical competency appraisal is required.

For each unit there are usually two to three assessment items.

Teaching methods

On-campus students experience a variety of teaching approaches including face-to-face lectures and tutorials. Some units offer online activities, classes, pre-recorded and/or live lectures. The method of teaching may vary from unit to unit.

The online study option is highly interactive and strives to promote collaboration and a sense of community. Students may receive online pre-recorded and/or live lectures, electronic study materials, workshops, online discussion forums and virtual classes. The method of teaching may vary from unit to unit.

Advanced standing

Your previous learning experiences relevant to one or more units in this course may help you reduce the duration of your degree.

  • Recognition of formal and non-formal learning
    Credit may be awarded to a student for formal learning (gained through full or partial achievement of an accredited qualification or course) or non-formal learning (that takes place through a non-accredited course or program of learning) completed at Southern Cross University or in other learning settings in Australia and/or overseas.

An application for advanced standing must be submitted so we can assess your prior learning. Please apply for advanced standing at the same time as you apply for admission into this course, because the amount of credit awarded will determine the sequence of units you will study.

Learning support

Learning resources

MySCU is a student's point of entry to a range of online services and resources that support study and student life. The portal includes unit learning sites and information sites where students can access resources, communication tools and useful links that are integral to their studies.

The web-based study environment Blackboard Learn delivers an advanced online learning environment for students and lecturers to communicate and collaborate through virtual meeting spaces, classrooms, and discussion boards. They can share files, presentations and applications. If a tutorial or lecture is recorded, students can view it afterwards.

Learning materials include the provision of unit information guides, study guides and readings. Students may need to purchase or access prescribed text books.

The SCU Library provides a wide range of services that include face-to-face and online help, and access to print and electronic resources. To find out more, see the Library Toolbox.

The Academic Skills team supports student learning by offering online and on-campus academic skills workshops, assignment reviews and small group or one-on-one face-to-face, phone or Skype consultations during business hours 9am to 4.30pm. Appointments can be made via the MySCU Hub ‘Connect Now’ button or on the Academic Skills home page. Students can also book appointments online in Career Hub.

The YourTutor service provides online after-hours study support for SCU students. This service is available from 4pm to midnight Sunday to Friday via the 'Connect Now' button on MySCU Hub or from a link in nominated unit learning sites. The YourTutor service offers generic writing feedback and live online chat assistance for foundational concepts and study skills.

Equipment and facilities

Students have access to state-of-the-art facilities, teaching areas and teaching and learning resources including simulation equipment, clinical learning spaces within on-campus clinics, laboratories for anatomy and physiology, movement and biomechanics, orthoses and bracing, and a footwear and orthoses manufacturing facility suitable for footwear science.

Admission requirements

  1. Applicants who do not meet Rule 2 Section 1 Clause (7)a must demonstrate English language proficiency by achieving an International English Language Testing System (IELTS) score of 7.0 with a score of no less than 6.5 across each of the bands of reading, writing, speaking and listening.
  2. An applicant who has completed a Certificate III qualification will not be admitted solely on the basis of this qualification.

Course requirements

To be eligible for the award of Bachelor of Pedorthics a candidate shall successfully complete the equivalent of twenty four (24) units (288 credit points) comprising all units listed in the Schedule of Units attached to these Rules.

Professional Experience Learning

This course includes professional experience learning. Pre-requisites to meet national and state-based regulatory requirements, as detailed on School of Health and Human Sciences Professional Experience page must be met prior to attending professional experience placement. All professional experience learning hours must be completed and professional behaviour and conduct must be demonstrated.

Advanced standing

Candidates who have completed the Bachelor of Podiatry and Podiatrists registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency may be granted advanced standing for up to seventeen (17) units towards the Bachelor of Pedorthics.
