Unit aim

Continuing to challenge the students in a range of leading contemporary art practices and methods, this unit promotes the Sculpture and Spatial Practice approach to conceptual and material understanding in the studio. Associated projects are introduced based on theories of contemporary art practices, collaborative practices and individual modes of focused outcomes. Students will develop inventive and sustainable solutions to a series of projects that will enable them to form the basis of personal methodology and material language.

  • Understanding what contemporary sculpture looks like and is informed by
  • Understanding the language of the expanded field of sculpture and spatial practice
  • Develop an appreciation for material manipulation and methods
  • Sculpture after the found object and the ready-made
  • Understanding composition within spatial practice
  • Contemporary methods for sculpture

1 initiate, develop and express conceptual and material solutions to sculptural projects set across a range of materials
2 apply and advance their understanding of a variety of production methods used in the studio environment, have an appreciation of various mediums, their properties and uses, and be able to work with materials and techniques in an experimental and sustainable manner
3 apply interdisciplinary approaches within the fine art field at both individual and collaborative levels
4 demonstrate understanding of the synthesis between observation, analysis, experimentation and critique within sculptural production and spatial practice
5 contextualise and critique their work and its theoretical and material rationale within the field of sculptural and spatial practice.
6 demonstrate understanding and apply the rules of occupational health and safety appropriate to the discipline practice

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
